Uterine Fibroids
At VCU Health, we specialize in the care and treatment of women with uterine fibroids.
Uterine fibroids are benign, noncancerous growths that may be located within the muscle wall of the uterus, underlying the lining of the uterine cavity, just beneath the outer covering layer of the uterus, or on a stalk inside or outside the uterus. Fibroids can occur on any part of the uterus including the cervix. They may vary in size, shape and location and often change the shape of the uterus. Symptoms range from severe cramps and excessive bleeding to constipation and anemia.
Relatively common, uterine fibroids affect approximately 20 percent to 40 percent of women over the age of 35. African-American women are the most racially prone group — an estimated 50 percent to 80 percent of African-American women in the U.S. will develop fibroids — as are women with a family history of fibroids.
“Both the nurse and the doctor were very informative. They took the time to explain everything to me; that helped calm my nerves down. They took good care of me even after the UFE procedure was over. I am glad I did it; my cycle is much better.”
